WE NEED MORE JANK

Recently, I have returned to a PC game called "Brigand: Oaxaca". My attempt at the game's DLC - situated in Panama - goes... poorly. Mostly due to the punishing nature of the game, my poor decisions in the past... but also - due to the game's jank. And that's a good thing!

Here's the thing - the game is, objectively, difficult to play. Part of that is its technical difficulties. Glitches come and go, crashes tend to happen, heck - even saves can collide with your antivirus, to the point where even the dev encourages you to whitelist the game! It's not the kind of game which you can just grab and play - it requires patience.

I can only imagine most gamers bounce away from this title. Graphics, difficulty, technical issues - those are but a few reasons you might not be into Brigand. It's not the only game with such problems. Cruelty Squad is famously hideous, Sims 3 requires quite a bit of tinkering to be remotely playable, and slav-jank games, such as You Are Empty or Stalker, are infamous due to their technical issues.

However, in my opinion - it's worth dipping your toes further. Beneath all the issues, you can find real treasure. Brigand is my favorite example so far. Like mentioned above - it's really easy to bounce away from (it took me three attempts before it clicked!), but beneath all the issues is a really thought-out, compelling im-sim you could sink hours into. If you like Deus Ex, Thief or other immersive simulators - pick this one up!

But coming back to the topic at hand - we need more games like Brigand. Sure, it's janky. Ugly. Off-putting. But it has HEART. It's made entirely by one dev, from the engine to the design. It's a project of passion, and despite its issues - or rather, due to them - it's what truly makes the game shine. What makes me drawn to it.

As weird as it might sound, I want to see more games ridden with issues. More games that need dedication to play. Because beneath all these games is an attempt. Maybe the results aren't the best, but the creator's heart is there; their vision is visible, and that's what's important.

Your skills shouldn't discourage you from creating. Whatever you envision - show it to the world. Each project you do, each game you make, each drawing that comes out from your pencils - it's a testament to your skill growing, and it's a piece of your imagination.

Slav-jank games - games coming from Eastern Europe, famously known for their technical issues, bugs, glitches...
